Use Color Resin to 3D print parts in color, without the need for painting. Color Resin shares material properties with other Standard Resins and is available through Form X, Formlabs’ experimental product platform.
To create Color Resin, combine 100 mL of Color Pigment with the Color Base in the resin cartridge. Use recipes from Formlabs to combine CMYKW pigments and create a cartridge of Color Resin in one of 16 supported colors.
Each Color Kit includes:
- Color Base cartridge containing 800 mL of base material
- Color Pigment bottles containing 115 mL of pigment each
- Cyan Pigment (C)
- Magenta Pigment (M)
- Yellow Pigment (Y)
- Black Pigment (K)
- White Pigment (W)
- A 10 mL syringe for each pigment
- Recipe Book
- Storage bags for syringes and pigments
- a timer
- a pen
- a notepad
After choosing a recipe, use the syringes to measure and dispense pigment into the cartridge. Shake the cartridge vigorously to combine pigments with the base material and create Color Resin. After creating Color Resin, use a new resin tank to start the first print.
Access recipes and review detailed instructions for using Color Resin.
Maintaining a Color Resin Library
Whether planning to print with one color or maintaining multiple Color Resin cartridges, an organized materials library supports a streamlined workflow and avoids mismatching tanks and cartridges.
Each pigment bottle includes space to label the volume of pigment remaining. Tally the pigment while mixing the recipe, then update the pigment bottle with the volume remaining.
The Form 2 and Dashboard detect all resin cartridges and resin tanks that contain Color Resin as “Color Resin”. The Form 2 and Dashboard cannot automatically detect individual color names.
- Use Dashboard’s material manager to edit the name of each resin cartridge and resin tank with the color name.
- For the easiest use, label each Color Resin cartridge and resin tank to indicate the specific color, for example, “Apricot.”
- Consider adding distinguishing data, such as the date of mixing, on the resin cartridge or resin tank to help track consumption and material lifetime.
To preserve resin lifetime and the integrity of the color, shake the resin cartridge periodically during storage and between uses. Follow the resin care guidelines, after reviewing the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
Like Formlabs resins, Color Pigments cure when exposed to light. Refer to the SDS for storage guidelines. Store each syringe and pigment bottle in the resealable bags and away from light when not in use.
As with other Formlabs materials, handle Color Pigment, Color Base, and Color Resin with care. Color Pigment and Color Base have separate SDS documentation. Always consult the SDS as the primary source of information to understand safety and handling of Formlabs materials. After reviewing the SDS, refer to general resin care guidelines for advice on storing, handling, and disposing of resin. Use the same guidelines for Color Pigment. Do not wash or dispose of Color Resin or Color Pigment in standard waste disposal or drains.
