The Form 2 features an automatic resin handling system that tracks resin consumption and automates resin dispensing. The resin handling system includes the resin cartridge, resin tanks, the cartridge floor assembly, the tank carrier, and the LevelSense board.
Designate a different resin tank for each type of resin cartridge. The Form 2 resin handling system uses the ID chips on the cartridge and resin tank to track resin consumption. The printer automatically refills the active resin tank when the resin level is low. The resin handling system also records resin usage data, which can help inform the decision to replace a used resin tank.
Inserting a Resin Cartridge
1. Shake the resin cartridge
Before inserting a new cartridge, shake the cartridge to ensure the resin is mixed thoroughly.
2. Remove the valve cover
Remove the protective valve cover from the underside of the cartridge. Use the cover to protect the bite valve during storage.
WARNING:Do not remove the bite valve at the bottom of the cartridge. This bite valve controls the release of the resin. Removing the bite valve would allow resin to flow continuously and cause severe damage to the machine.
3. Align the cartridge
Align the cartridge with the opening at the back of the printer. Push down on the cartridge handle until the top of the cartridge is level with the printer.
4. Open the vent cap
Press open the vent cap before starting a print so that the resin tank fills correctly.
TIPEnsure the material in the resin tank always matches the resin type of the inserted cartridge.
Automatic Resin Dispensing
The Form 2 regulates the volume of resin in the tank through a sensor called the LevelSense board, which is located behind the resin tank. The printer begins to fill the resin tank once a print starts and maintains the level of resin in the tank during the print.
If the cartridge is empty, or if the printer is unable to dispense additional resin, the Form 2 pauses the print and displays the “Cartridge Dispense Error” message on the touchscreen.
Removing a Resin Cartridge
When changing resin types, always change both the tank and the cartridge.
1. Close the vent cap
Press the vent cap closed.
2. Remove the cartridge from the printer
Hold the cartridge handle and lift to remove from the Form 2. Store the cartridge upright with the valve cover installed to protect storage surfaces from resin.
TIPRemove the cartridge before removing the tank to prevent the cartridge valve from dripping resin into the printer.
Protecting the ID Chip
The Form 2 uses ID chips on resin tanks and resin cartridges to detect, track, and match the resin type in the tank with the proper resin cartridge. ID chips look like two small silver rectangular pads. Each resin tank has an ID chip on the underside of the tank frame. Each resin cartridge has an ID chip located on the bottom of the cartridge near the bite valve. Protect the ID chip from resin contamination or damage.
Liquid resin contamination on the ID chip, the tank carrier, the tank spring fingers, or the cartridge spring fingers may cure over time. Cured resin or any contamination on the resin tank ID chip, the tank carrier, or tank spring fingers prevents the Form 2 from properly identifying a tank during insertion. Cured resin or any contamination on the cartridge ID chip or cartridge spring fingers prevents the Form 2 from properly identifying a cartridge during insertion or use.
When handling resin tanks, avoid exposing the resin tank ID chip, the tank carrier, and the tank carrier fingers to liquid resin. When handling resin cartridges, avoid exposing the cartridge ID chip to liquid resin.
Cleaning the ID chip
If the ID chip on the resin tank or cartridge becomes contaminated with resin, gently remove the resin using Formlabs instructions.
To remove resin from the ID chip, use a new cotton swab with a small amount of clean IPA applied to the tip. Rub the tip onto the two silver pads on the ID chip until the cured resin or contamination has dissolved completely.
CAUTION:Avoid getting IPA on other parts of the resin tank or cartridge. Ensure that any IPA on the ID chip dries completely before resuming use.
Inspecting the Bite Valve
When switching to a different resin cartridge, inspect the bite valve for any cured resin or damage.
CAUTION:In the case of damage to the bite valve, stop using the resin cartridge immediately. Using a cartridge with a damaged bite valve can cause resin spills, which can damage the printer.
The bite valve is located under the resin cartridge. This flexible seal regulates resin dispensing. Resin flows out of the opening in the center of the bite valve when the cartridge dispense arm squeezes the valve open.
Resin may cure over the bite valve opening, which can prevent the bite valve from dispensing resin. To troubleshoot a closed bite valve:
1. Close the vent cap and remove the resin cartridge from the printer.
2. Turn the cartridge upside down to inspect the bite valve.
TIP:Always wear clean gloves when handling resin or optical surfaces.
3. Squeeze the valve a few times to open up the seal and enable resin flow.
Inspecting the LevelSense board
The LevelSense board is the black panel located behind the resin tank at the base of the Z tower. The LevelSense board measures and regulates the refill rate of the resin in the tank. Resin contamination or damage on the board can affect the accuracy of measurements and may lead to problems with printing.
The LevelSense board is contaminated
If the LevelSense board is contaminated with resin:
- Apply a small amount of clean IPA to a paper towel.
- Wipe the board to clean off any resin contamination.
CAUTION:Avoid IPA or resin contamination on the silver, button-shaped thermopile. The thermopile is an infrared (IR) sensor located on the lower right corner of the LevelSense board and senses resin temperature. If the thermopile is contaminated, contact Formlabs Support.
The LevelSense board is damaged
If the LevelSense board is damaged with scratches and/or dents, contact Formlabs Support. Include a well-lit, focused photo of the damaged LevelSense board in the request.
